Seeming Irrelevance
Just a thought on something that seems irrelevant to all of you:
Why do parents try their best to let their children live well? (Stupid question, right) Of course it's because they want the best for their children and do not want them to go through (perhaps) the hardship they had to endure in the past.
They also use their experience and knowledge to prevent their children from falling into the traps they had fallen into in the past. Etcetera.
But in the process, they would have deprived their children of a rich store of experiences from which they could learn a whole lot more things than by merely listening to their parents. This is because the amygdala (haha. Emotions exam on Friday =P) would have made an association between the feared object/event to enable an individual to avoid it in the future - and this is a more complete lesson then avoiding the thing.
Incidentally, I am talking about ambiguous objects/events here, not definite fearful objects like...a large fire. Haha.
It is only through experiencing the bad that one can compare the good with it and call it "good". (Sounds like the chapter on Joy in Emotions =P) And that is certainly the best way to learn.
Maybe I should not be a depriving parent in the future. Hmmmm.
